Please read this and pass it along, even if you do not fully understand … it’s important, really (I’ll make it quick)
Net Neutrality: is a very important concept (similar to freedom) that the technology community has supported for a long time. It keeps the internet deregulated … so that ISPs (the folks who provide connectivity to the internet) can not slow down or block select content.
**Net Neutrality keeps the internet uncensored, free and fair**
On March 2008, John McCain was asked “Mac or PC?” and he replied “Neither. I'm an illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all the assistance I can get.”
Mr. McCain is now aggressively fighting against Net Neutrality. Thursday, October 22nd he said: “Today I'm pleased to introduce the Internet Freedom Act of 2009 that will keep the Internet free from government control and regulation,”
Do not let the term “Freedom” fool you … the purpose of the act is anything but that. This deregulation he speaks of is tearing down rules the FCC has setup in order to keep the internet free. His Act would allow ISPs to filter and slow content based on their choosing.
If internet providers had the ability to slow and block content – big business could filter the US internet similar to how it is filtered in China. It would allow ISPs to play favorites based on who has the most money.
How would you like to have 3 “preferred” websites, similar to the way we used to have 3 television channels? If Mr. McCain’s act passes that could become a reality.
Mr. McCain is, self admittedly, not knowledgeable on this topic. He must be acting to support the lobbyist for AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and others. It should be noted that he is the largest beneficiary of Telco/ISP Lobby Money. He is not acting on our behalf. Please do not let his greed and the greed of those companies succeed.
Please contact your senator and let them know you are not in favor of Mr. McCain’s bill and how this is a very important issue for you: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
For convenience, I have placed an email template below that you are free to use or modify. Again, this is very important … Please take the few minutes required to contact your Senator and pass this along.
Dear <Senator or Representative Name Here>,
I am writing to express my concern over the “Internet Freedom Act of 2009” proposed by Senator McCain of AZ. Let me make clear – I do not support this bill. I want the internet to remain truly free and Mr. McCain’s proposed act would be a huge step backward in that effort.
If you do not fully understand Net Neutrality, please visit with an unbiased person in the technology field. Net Neutrality is a synonym for freedom in the technology community. Mr. McCain is undoubtedly fighting against freedom this day, while using the name freedom to promote his agenda.
The way that you vote on this issue will unquestionably have an affect on if I vote for you.
Thank you for your help in this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
